Type of Chihuahua

If you are still uncertain, which type of Chihuahua you like better (there are two types of Chihuahua dogs – the smooth-coated and the long-coated), take your time and see as many dogs and puppies as you can. When choosing a puppy, making hasty decisions is the worst thing to do. If you feel like you have fallen deeply in love with Chihuahuas, you must be very careful and prudent when choosing the right puppy and the right breeder to buy a puppy from.

Chihuahuas are tiny and delicate little creatures. They measure 6-10 inches high at the withers. These dogs are renowned for their fragile and funny appearance. They are not meant for any work, sport or service, and are fully intended as home companions. However, this does not make them less intelligent. Chihuahuas are quick learners, and they are very fond of intelligent games and interaction with their loved ones. Both types of Chihuahua are popular among dog lovers, and the length of the coat is the only thing that makes them different. As to their physical and behavioral characteristics, they live up to the standard to an equal extent.

Chihuahuas have apple-shaped heads with large erectile ears and large round eyes, which gives them a characteristic saucy expression. These dogs have a deep and broad chest. The limbs are set widely apart. The coat comes in different colors, including brown, fawn, red, sand, white, black, black-and-tan, etc. Actually, all colors and color combinations are acceptable with both types of Chihuahua, except merle. The merle color is defined by the gene that causes blindness and deafness, and hence merle dogs should not be bred.

Chihuahuas have quite a specific temperament. They are naturally protective and people-oriented, like most other dogs. However, their small size and delicate outer appearance may cause people to cherish them too much and let them do what they would not have let a large dog do. Not infrequently, this results in inadequate and aggressive attitude toward other dogs and suspiciousness toward strangers. Many Chihuahuas become extremely jealous and possessive around their loved ones. As we can see, the most difficult thing about training Chihuahuas is resisting the temptation to indulge this tiny and cute creature. Regardless of type of Chihuahua, they must be trained in a positive yet firm way, like any other dog.
